Tortoise and turtle conservation is crucial for the South

Toliara - The time for a conference to raise awareness for both tortoise and turtle conservation in the Southwest of Madagascar could not have been more appropriate.
Even as WWF Toliara was holding this conference, participants received the breaking news: tortoise poachers had been arrested outside Toliara and 1475 living tortoises as well as dry tortoise meat confiscated. Fortunately, almost all of them were still alive.

Furcifer belalandaensis (Belalan)

Protecting the chameleon Furcifer belalandaensis

Furcifer belalandaensis is a chameleon species endemic to the rural commune of Belalanda in the district of Toliara II, in the Region Atsimo Andrefana.
The NGO “Madagasikara Voakajy" has been conducting a study in close collaboration with WWF since 2009. The objective is to monitor this endemic species, especially within the new protected area PK-32 Ranobe. Local guides were also participating in the survey.

UNESCO recognizes threats to Madagascar rainforest

The United Nations’ Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has placed the Atsinanana rainforest in Madagascar on its list of World Heritage in Danger sites because of an ongoing government-influenced illegal logging crisis and continuing lemur bush meat consumption in some of the national parks that are part of the forest.

Toliara - A national consultation workshop was held in Toliara in July, under the initiative of creating Marine Protected Areas and the establishment of seasonal fishing reserves in the area of North Salary. This meeting was initiated by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the Community association Soariake in the rural village of South Manombo, and WWF.

Malagasy Tortoises illegally on sale in Indonesia

Jakarta, Indonesia—Ploughshares, the world’s rarest tortoise species have been observed openly for sale at an exposition in the centre of Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.
Ploughshare Tortoises Astrochelys yniphora and other threatened reptile species were seen illegally on sale by TRAFFIC staff last week at the expo which ran from 2 July to 2 August.
