How MITAO Forecast is changing the lives of fishers in Menabe

In 25 intervention villages of WWF Madagascar, Early Warning System devices called MITAO Forecast have been installed to strengthen the safety and resilience of coastal communities.

The system aims to improve local populations’ access to weather information, particularly about wind direction and other essential data, to anticipate risks related to going out to sea. Fishers, whose activities are closely dependent on the sea and weather conditions, are the main beneficiaries of MITAO Forecast. Thanks to the forecast board, they can now plan their fishing trips more safely and efficiently, reducing the risk of accidents while improving their ability to adapt to climate change. The forecast board also makes information more accessible, as it is easy to read and understand. The Menabe region, one of the areas where this system has been installed, is a concrete example of its impact.

Ms Théresavy, a mother and president of the fishers’ association in Belo sur Mer, “Milano Riaky” (swimming in the sea in english), speaks with conviction about the impact of this Early Warning System on their daily lives:“Every morning, before going out to sea, we check the early warning system. If it shows a red signal, we don’t go, because it means the weather will be bad. This device has become essential for us: it informs us about weather conditions before each trip and helps us make the right decisions.” Since the installation of the system, the fishing community has noticed a real change. “Since this system was installed, we haven’t faced any problems: no boats have capsized, and no fishers have lost their lives at sea. This early warning system also helps us deal with the effects of climate change, because the weather can be unpredictable, sometimes it’s bad, and other times it’s good.” Beyond ensuring safety at sea, the system also contributes to families’ resilience. “When the signal is red, we can get ready in advance. We make food reserves to feed our families and organize other activities to maintain our income. We also have other activities when we can’t go fishing, like seaweed farming or crab fishing in the mangroves.”

WWF Madagascar’s support includes the installation of MITAO Forecast devices, capacity building for beneficiary communities to ensure proper ownership of the system, as well as ongoing monitoring and technical coordination with the implementing partner, Aquatic Services.
