Rasina Jamaly, nurserywoman in Tsimandrafoza, in the Tsiribihina mangroves

Rasina Jamaly is a mother of five : three girls and two boys. She is the only woman working in mangrove nurseries in the village of Tsimandrafoza, located within the Tsiribihina mangroves, a Ramsar site recognized for its international importance.

A courageous woman, Rasina has chosen to dedicate herself to protecting nature: “I took this initiative because mangroves are essential to our livelihoods. We also protect them to leave something meaningful for future generationsif they disappear it will be a real hardship for those who come after us.”
Rasina tends to the mangrove nurseries with great care: “When we maintain the nurseries, we replace the dead plants with new propagules. If the soil becomes too dry, we water them. Since December, the intense heat has caused some losses, so we decided to install shade.”
Resilient and determined, Rasina moves forward with hope: “I’m very motivated to take care of these nurseries,” she says. “We’re always looking for ways to keep them alive, because our goal is to protect and grow the mangroves. No difficulty can discourage us from this work.”
For more than ten years, WWF has been supporting the nursery workers in Tsimandrafoza, providing training in nursery maintenance and monitoring techniques.
