Conservation Manager

The WWF Madagascar Office is recruiting a (01) Conservation Manager.
Location : AntananarivoTerm of contract : Indeterminate employment contract.
Job assignment :
Under the supervision of the Country Director, the Conservation Manager oversees the management of the four-landscape programme; he/she provides strategic direction for the overall WWF conservation programme and ensures the coordination between the various units contributing to the conservation strategy deliver, so that they work effectively together to achieve the WWF 2026-30 conservation goals for Madagascar & Southwestern Indian Ocean Region. He/she is a member of the Senior Management Team.
Strategic Direction, Coordination and Programme Development
- Coordinates the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the 2026-2030 Programme Conservation Plan, in close collaboration with all relevant unit leads and fosters synergy and integration between them
- Provides strategic direction in the identification and design of new projects to deliver on the conservation strategy.
- Coordinates the preparation of the annual report and conservation KPIs and WWF PO Dashboard conservation sections, submitted to WWF International.
- Actively takes part in developing and maintaining external relations and partnerships that are needed to achieve the Conservation Plan, including relations and partnerships within the WWF global network.
- Provides strategic orientation and operational tools to continuously improve WWF’s approaches to area-based conservation and supervises the relevant experts in this area (Sr Officer, CBRNM and PA)
- Represents WWF-Madagascar is relevant fora and communities within the WWF global network (eg. Conservation Directors forum, Regional Conservation Directors community) and acts as liaison between these fora and communities and the other SMT members.
- As a member of the Senior Management Team, he/she will actively contribute to the achievement of the WWF 2026-30 strategic goals and objectives.
Oversight of Landscape Management :
- Supervises Landscape Managers by fostering the WWF values and ensuring their high performance.
- Provides strategic guidance and technical support to landscape teams in the development and implementation of an integrated landscape approach (following the WWF-5 elements of integrated landscape management) and ensures that the contribution/support of other units (Policy and Technical Support, Grants Management, Results-based Management) to landscape programmes are coordinated and synergistic.
- In close collaboration with the Policy and Technical Support Unit Coordinator, facilitates the coordination and articulation of policy advocacy work from the landscape level to the national level.
- Leads the annual work plans and related budgeting processes for landscape programmes and works with the Policy and Technical Support Unit Coordinator to foster close coordination between landscape and thematic annual workplans.
- Responsible for the overall oversight and quality assurance of landscape programmes and their project portfolio from design to implementation to close out, including strategic planning, risk management, performance management and compliance to WWF’s standards.
- Provide strategic support in partnership development, as relevant to landscape priorities
- Ensures compliance with contracts and timely submission of high-quality technical reports to donors, WWF International, and all relevant parts of the WWF Network in compliance with agreed standards (both in English and French).
Profile
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in the conservation biology, natural resources management or another related field;
- Strong experience in complex programme management and good understanding/experience of the integrated landscape approach
- A minimum of 10 years’ experiences in leading and implementing conservation programmes.
- International professional experience in conservation or rural development or another related field ;
Required Skills and Competencies
- Strong leadership and management skills ;
- Proactive attitude and ability to take initiative and work independently.
- Excellent team player with good networking and interpersonal skills ;
- Excellent written and oral communications skills, fluency in Malagasy, French and English languages.
- Excellent computer knowledge (word-processing, spreadsheet, e-mail…).
