WWF Madagascar stands by the Malagasy Government to push together the Blue Economy

A sustainable blue economy must be built on principles of inclusion, equity, transparency and accountability...

The sustainable blue economy is a marine-based economy that provides social and economic benefits to current and future generations; restores, protects and maintains the diversity, productivity, resilience, ecological functions and intrinsic values of marine ecosystems. A sustainable blue economy must be built on principles of inclusion, equity, transparency and accountability; and take into account the best scientific and traditional knowledge in a holistic, multi-sectoral and long-term approach.

WWF promotes sustainable marine spatial planning (MSP). This refers to a process that takes particular account of the principles of integrated ecosystem-based management, human rights and climate change. Such MSP should also lay the foundation for a sustainable blue economy and serve as a multi-stakeholder approach to improve ocean governance towards sustainability and equity.

A sharing workshop concerning the implementation of MSP standards in the Diana region took place on January 24 between members of the Blue Economy and Ocean Governance cluster. The Diana region was chosen to inaugurate this project because of its large ocean area and its particularity in terms of fishing and tourism. All the actors (local or governmental) aim to contribute to the development of this region by offering jobs to young people and thus improve the quality of life of the communities.

This project, supported by WWF, is led by the Ministry of Land Management and Services (MATSF), the Ministry of Fisheries and the Blue Economy (MPEB), and the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD).
