The Northern Highlands are home to one of the largest forest blocks in Madagascar. Relatively intact and protected from human actions in some areas, the Northern Highlands remain an immense preserve of Madagascar’s exceptional biodiversity.
The Northern Highlands landscape
The Northern Highlands landscape is subject to pressures that are accelerating its degradation and loss of natural wealth. These include:
● Slash-and-burn agriculture destroys forests and causes soil erosion.
● Climate change is changing agricultural seasons.
● Uncontrolled or illegal logging of valuable timber, even in protected areas, is threatening habitats and the wildlife that reside in them, as well sa the forest resources that local communities depend on.
● The sustainable management of water resources, especially rivers, is essential because several million people depend on its preservation for drinking water and water for agriculture.
In order to achieve the changes we are considering in the Northern Highlands landscape, we are committed to an approach that emphasizes:
1. Empowering civil societies.
2. Scaling up our actions by involving all sectors (public and private) and partnerships.
3. The transition of WWF from having a direct implementation role on the ground to a role of influence within local communities.
4. Our belief that sustainable development in Madagascar is achievable when its natural capital, anchored in infrastructures or green spaces, is secure, and its products and benefits are equitably shared between the actors.
